cruising river

These particular scenes were not captured on a Sunday, but were taken almost one year ago.

The lovely thing about cruising is that planning usually turns out to be of little use. – Dom Degnon

Lakes, Rivers, Oceans, Ponds, Oh MY!

I love to be near the ocean, a lake, a river or a pond. I enjoy the natural beauty that illuminates before me, and I find myself in awe when thinking about what is before my eyes.

One day while walking the perimeter of a lake, I saw a man in a kayak. It got me wondering, and when I went home, I did some research. Here is a post of mine (reflective of that research) from June 23, 2014, regarding Jews and Kayaking.

Pelican White Egret

Water Scenics and Jewish Reflection is a post of mine regarding the Venice Canals in Venice, CA, and the ocean in Santa Monica.

The next time you are wandering near a lake, stream, river, the ocean or a pond, take a moment to reflect on the loveliness before you.

Sunday Scenes: December 7, 2014

A few days ago, I drove into a public parking lot, stepped out, and proceeded to walk along the river walkway paralleling Columbia River in WA, on a cold autumn morning. Brr…the morning temperature was 24 degrees! I pulled the hood of my jacket over the wool hat I was wearing, wrapped my scarf a bit more over my nose and mouth, and took in the lovely views along the river walk.

The river walkway was empty, and I was the only person walking on it, for about 1/2 a mile, and then a runner passed me by, running in the opposite direction. She said good morning to me, and I responded in the same way. She had on knee-length running shorts a long-sleeved shirt, running knee-high socks, running shoes, a ski cap, and gloves. I understand the fact she was wearing shorts, even though it was frigid out. When running (or even walking), one’s body motion can often overcome the cold temperatures.

I was dressed for the weather, probably more than necessary. Aside from my forehead feeling cold, the rest of me was quite comfortable and warm, the entire time I walked. I walked for about two miles. When I returned to my car, I had a thermos of coffee waiting for me. I sat inside my car, facing the river, sipping my coffee, and was grateful for nature’s loveliness before me.

Moon Above, River Below

It was an overcast morning as our walk began. The sky was filled with grey clouds, the sun was not visible, but the moon was still visible, trying to spread its glow in between the clouds. The slight coolness of the morning was pleasant, and we all agreed it was much better walking in this weather than in the 100+ degree temperatures that can occur in the summer time.

Spring does have its positives, especially around the lake. The birds chatter away, the ducks, geese mud hens and other feathered creatures linger in the lake, gliding slowly, trying to awaken themselves. There are visions of wisteria trees with beautiful lavender blooms, and some with white ones. Their blooms will die off in another week or so. The cherry blossoms are beginning to fade away, too.

The lake area and its sanctuaries are a retreat for many people on the weekend, and even at 8:00 a.m. one can see people everywhere, escaping the bustle of the surrounding towns. There are walkers, runners, bicycle riders, those in canoes, others having a picnic breakfast, golfers on the adjacent golf course, and people from all walks of life enjoying the natural environment.

I enjoy my walking group, and it is a lovely way to not only walk, and get exercise, for one and one half hours (yes, we do this nonstop, other than to take one photo under a tree or near a beautiful setting), but also to interact with others in the group. I am glad to have found the “weekend walkers”.
