A man of wisdom delights in water. -Confucius

The marsh, to him who enters it in a receptive mood, holds, besides mosquitoes and stagnation, melody, the mystery of unknown waters, and the sweetness of Nature undisturbed by man. -Charles William Beebe (1906)

Time Flies

monterey 7 25 14

Time flies when you are having fun. And, fun I had, up visiting my brother and sister-in-law, who live on the Monterey Peninsula, in Pacific Grove, CA.

beach side

I intentionally chose not to blog. I wanted to enjoy the time spent with family members, enjoying hiking, lighthouse touring, aquarium exhibits, eating, walking along the beach, laughing, and creating fun memories.

Clarity

That’s the way things come clear. All of a sudden. And then you realize how obvious they’ve been all along.
-Madeleine L’Engle

The above photos were captured standing outside at The Monterey Bay Aquarium, while viewing the sea from above. I do no know the people in the photographs. The sun was out, the ocean showed its illuminating and stunning blueness.

It was a wonderful tour, wandering through the aquarium. And, the location is perfect, as it overlooks the sea in all its wonder and vastness. From jellyfish to sea otters, puffins to penguins, the aquarium was a place of marvel. I will be posting more photographs, eventually.

Sea Floor

I have read over 1,500 book pages the past week. Those pages were within the covers of two books:

I read The Rise of David Levinsky.

I also read Norman Mailer: A Double Life.

I chose to read The Rise of David Levinsky for its depiction of late 19th century, and early 20th century New York’s garment industry. I thought it would be a fascinating subject, and it most definitely was. I will be reviewing it at some point.

There were some similarities between Levinsky and Mailer, as far as ambition, which I thought was interesting. Levinsky was an immigrant from Russia, and Mailer was an American, yet their ambitions were similar…the search for respect, recognition and power seems to have ruled both of them. I will be writing more on comparisons in the future.

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
-Mahatma Gandhi

We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came.
-John F. Kennedy

Bookish Friday-October 3, 2013

inlet

I have recently added a couple of new books to my to-read stack:

Rav Hisda’s Daughter: Book I: Apprentice: A Novel of Love, the Talmud and Sorcery
, by Maggie Anton

I totally enjoyed Maggie Anton’s trilogy on Rashi’s Daughters, and look forward to this book.

The Oxford Book of Jewish Stories, by Ilan Stavans (recommended by Leora)

Paris, The Novel
, by Edward Rutherfurd

I am in the middle of reading New York, The Novel, by Edward Rutherfurd. Well, I shouldn’t say “middle”, as I am about 18% into it, as it is almost 900 pages. I do enjoy Rutherfurd’s books, though.

Leora’s recipe for Stuffed Squash with Yams sounds delicious.

On a very serious note, Batya/me-ander has a post regarding a breast milk mix-up…in other words a baby received breast milk from an HIV-positive mother.

Shabbat Shalom!
